Yaya Toure named African player of the year 2013... Really felt Obi deserved it this time
The Ivoirian has been named the best player from the continent for a third straight time after beating compatriot Didier Drogba and local favourite Obi Mikel at a ceremony in Lagos
Manchester City's Yaya Toure has been named the African Player of the Year 2013 by the Confederation of African Football at an awards ceremony held in Lagos on Thursday evening.
The Ivoirian won the title for a third straight time beating off competition from compatriot Didier Drogba and local favourite John Obi Mikel to the title.
In a ceremony dominated by Nigeria who swept the Coach of the Year and Team of the Year awards, many had expected Chelsea's Mikel to win the top gong on the back of the Super Eagles' victory at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, it was the Ivoirian Toure who was called up to the podium again, walking in the footsteps of Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o who won it thrice between 2003 and 2005.
Toure told media that he felt 'lucky' to win it considering the size of the competition.
In the other awards given on the evening, Egyptian Mohamed Aboutreika won the award for best African player based on the continent. It was a good send off for the 35-year-old who announced his retirement from football at the end of last season.
Aboutreika beat off competition from compatriot Ahmed Fathy and Nigerian midfielder Sunday Mba.
It wasn't all gloom for Nigeria as their coach Stephen Keshi won named best coach and the Super Eagles won the award for Team of the Year.
Youngster Kelechi Iheanacho who led Nigeria to the Fifa U17 World Cup victory was named Promising Young Player while his team was named the Youth Team of the Year.

AC Milan: Kaka Scores his 100th goal for AC Milan.. Thumbs up!!!
Brazilian playmaker Kaka surpassed 100 goals for AC Milan with two goals in a victory against Atalanta.
The 31-year-old, who last summer returned to the club for a second spell after joining Real Madrid in 2009, reached the landmark when he scored the opener following a counter attack.
Kaka got his and Milan's second with a close-range finish just after the hour, before teenager Bryan Cristante added a third with a low shot.
It was Milan's fifth win of the season.
Kaka has scored six goals since returning to AC Milan, who move up to 10th with 22 points following the win.
It was a positive start to the year for manager Massimiliano Allegri, who will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Arsenal: Walcott out for at least 6 months..Eeyah!! Sad face
Arsenal's Theo Walcott will miss the World Cup after being ruled out for at least six months with a knee injury.
The England forward, 24, was injured during the 2-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Tottenham on Saturday.
An Arsenal statement read: "Theo has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.
Walcott's injury comes as a significant blow to club and country on the same day the Football Association said it would take no further action against him over his gesture to Tottenham fans as he was carried from the field during Saturday's game.
He did not appear to be in severe pain as he was carried off, signalling the scoreline to Spurs' supporters.
CR7 Scores his 400th career goal. wow! what a milestone
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 400th career goal as Real Madrid laboured to victory over Celta Vigo and reduced the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Ronaldo's brace against Celta Vigo, saw him become the fourth highest scorer in Real Madrid La Liga history, masked what had been a pedestrian performance by a Real side who are now five points adrift of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in third.
The Portugal captain has now scored 400 goals in 653 games for his club - taking his season's tally to 28 - and it could be a memorable seven days for the Real forward as the Ballon d'Or award, for which he is favourite to win, is announced on 13 January.
